Racking Safety & Audits (AS 4084:2023)

Under Australian Standard AS 4084:2023, all steel storage racking must be inspected at least once every 12 months by a “competent person.”

While an annual professional audit is mandatory, we also recommend that your internal team conducts informal visual checks often to spot fresh defects (such as forklift damage) before it becomes critical.

What happens during a Racking Safety Audit?

Our audit process is non-intrusive and designed to keep your warehouse running. We inspect your system for:

  • Verticality: Are uprights leaning or out of plumb?
  • Damage: Impact damage from forklifts on uprights and footplates.
  • Beam Safety: Missing safety clips or deformed beams.
  • Floor Fixings: Loose or missing anchor bolts.

You will receive a detailed report categorising damage into three risk levels: Green (Monitor), Orange (Repair soon), and Red (Unload immediately).

  • Green (Surveillance): Minor damage within allowable limits. No immediate action is required, but it must be recorded and monitored.
  • Orange (Hazardous): Damage is significant. The bay does not need to be unloaded immediately, but repairs must be actioned as soon as possible.
  • Red (Very Serious): The damage is critical. The bay must be immediately offloaded and isolated until repairs are completed.

Yes. Every racking run must display a permanent, corrosion-resistant sign that details the Safe Working Load (SWL). This sign must include:

  • The manufacturer and supplier’s name.
  • The installation date.
  • The maximum weight per pallet (Unit Load).
  • The maximum weight per bay (Total Bay Load).
  • The distance between beam levels.

If your racks are missing these signs, they are non-compliant. Cannan Industries can calculate your load capacity and install new signage for you.

Installation & Racking Types

Can I install pallet racking myself?

Installing pallet racking yourself is highly risky and not recommended. While you can physically bolt it together, the installation must be certified to AS 4084:2023 to be legal. If you install it incorrectly (e.g., wrong bracing pattern, insufficient floor anchors, or un-level beams), you void the warranty and insurance, and you are personally liable if a collapse occurs.

It is almost always cheaper and safer to have Cannan Industries’ licensed installers do it right the first time. Get a pallet racking quote free today.

  • Selective Racking: The most common type. It allows you to access 100% of your pallets at any time. Ideal for businesses with many different product lines (SKUs).
  • Drive-In Racking: A high-density system where forklifts drive into the lanes to store pallets. It works on a Last-In, First-Out (LIFO) basis. Ideal for businesses storing large quantities of the same product.

Cantilever racking has no front uprights, making it perfect for storing long, awkward items that don’t fit on standard pallets. It is commonly used for:

  • Timber packs and lumber.
  • Steel or PVC pipes.
  • Aluminium extrusions.
  • Plasterboard sheets.

In many cases, we can repair the racking rather than replacing the whole bay. We can replace damaged uprights or beams with new components that match your existing system. However, if a component is “Red Risk” damaged or structurally compromised, replacement is the only safe option.

Mezzanine Floors (Raised Storage Areas)

Do I need council approval for a mezzanine floor?

Yes. A mezzanine floor is considered a structural addition to your building. In almost all cases, you will need a Building Permit or approval to ensure it complies with the National Construction Code (NCC). This involves checking fire safety (sprinklers/exits), emergency lighting, and structural engineering. Cannan Industries can guide you through this approval process.

Often, yes. Depending on the size of the floor and the use of the building, you may need to install smoke detection, emergency exit lighting, or extend your existing sprinkler system underneath the new floor. We can help you understand the safety requirements of your mezzanine flooring project.

The main difference is what holds the floor up and what you can do with the space underneath.

  • Structural Mezzanine (Free-Standing): This is built using heavy-duty steel columns (I-beams). It is the best option if you need open, clear space underneath the floor, for example, to run forklifts, set up a workshop, or create a packing area. It is generally more expensive but offers maximum flexibility.
  • Rack-Supported Mezzanine: This floor is built directly on top of shelving or pallet racking units. The racking itself acts as the support columns. This is the most cost-effective option if you already need shelving for parts or archive storage on the ground level. However, the space underneath is occupied by the racking, so you cannot drive forklifts through it.
